Mushrooms Baked In Grape Leaves

1 lb. small white mushrooms, cleaned and stems trimmed
Small jar of canned grape leaves (you'll only need to use 12-15)
or pick grape leaves from vine early in summer, blanch 2 mins. and freeze
1/4 cup olive oil
6 cloves garlic, peeled and pricked w/ fork
2 slices bacon (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

Line a small deep casserole dish with the grape leaves; Put mushrooms,
garlic and optional bacon in, drizzle with olive oil, season with
salt and pepper. Cover top with more grape leaves, then cover
casserole with foil or other well fitting lid. Bake in 350 degree
oven 35-40 minutes or until mushrooms are cooked. Remove top layer
of leaves and serve.

A lovely mushroom/olive oil juice will collect in the casserole.
This can be sopped up with French bread if you're feeling peasantlike.
Don't throw it out - save it for stock if your table manners don't
permit sopping!
